What are Spider Veins?

Spider veins, also medically known as telangiectasias or venulectasias, are the mildest manifestation of venous insufficiency, similar to varicose veins but smaller. They are tiny blood vessels closer to the surface of the skin than varicose veins and often look like tangled groups of blood vessels resembling spider webs or tree branches. They are generally red, blue or purple and are clearly visible, usually on the thighs, lower legs and face. Spider veins can sometimes cover large areas of skin, but they are only a cosmetic problem rarely causing physical symptoms. At least a third of all women and a smaller percentage of men are believed to have the condition.

Spider veins are thin walled capillaries directly connected with the larger venous system, and like varicose veins they are caused by venous reflux. Spider veins may be isolated or associated with feeder veins or with larger underlying varicose veins, but they are not varicose veins – they do not bulge above the skin surface and do not require medical treatment.

Spider vein treatments are considered cosmetic procedures and are not covered by health insurance.

Spider Veins- How Do They Form?

Spider veins are thought to form due to genetic reasons. Women get them more than men and they develop after an age. Young people don’t suffer from this problem much. Spider veins can also be caused by the backup of blood.

Spider Veins- What are the Risk Factors?

Spider veins are the mildest manifestation of venous reflux disease. Many of the risk factors for spider veins are similar to those for varicose veins – heredity, advancing age, pregnancy, obesity, hormonal changes and occupations requiring extended periods of standing. They can also be triggered by exposure to the ultraviolet rays of the sun, particularly in fair-skinned people, and by certain medications. Spider veins may also develop at the site of an injury to the skin surface, sometimes years after the injury. As with varicose veins, spider veins appear more often in women than in men.

Spider Veins- Can they be prevented?

Some physicians believe that exercise, weight loss and the wearing of support hose or stockings and flat shoes instead of high heels can reduce the incidence of spider veins.

Symptoms

Though spider veins rarely cause physical symptoms, they damage the skin beauty radically. Spider veins can form a painful blood clot with inflammation of the vein called thrombophlebitis.

Diagnosis

Spider veins can be diagnosed merely by sight. They tend to take on one of three characteristic patterns:

• Spider-Web or Sunburst: Radiating outward from a central point. They form a web like bundle that spreads from a center and that is why it is called spider veins.

• Matting or Tree-Branch: The small red and blue vein tangles are located just under the skin. They can

look like tree branches with their short jagged lines.

• Linear pattern: This may be nothing more than a set of thin lines.

Treatments

Spider veins can be treated using various methods depending on the location, width of the veins and severity of the problem. The only way to treat spider veins is to choke them up. They can be choked up in two ways: minimally invasive methods like Radio frequency, sclerotherapy and non-invasive method like Laser procedures.

Facial veins are treated with Radiofrequency or IPL (Intense Pulsed Light). Radiofrequency targets larger facial veins seen in severe rosacea. IPL is useful for a diffuse red blush or the finer veins of mild to moderate rosacea, and is also used for pigmentation due to sun damage or melasma.

What does Laser Spider Vein treatment involve?

Light emitted from the Laser safely passes through the outermost layers of the skin in search of the targeted vascular or pigmented lesions.  Without damaging the surrounding skin, the laser's intense light is absorbed by the targeted lesion.  The treated lesion will gradually fade or diminish.  In many cases, smaller vessels or pigmentation spots are eliminated in 1 to 2 treatments.  Medium or larger vessels may take additional treatments.

Laser treatment can be utilized for small facial areas or for the entire face.  Recently, full-face treatments have become increasingly popular.  Many people suffer from larger broken capillaries on their nose and cheeks and will have medium and smaller vessels on other facial areas.  A full-face treatment will improve the overall facial appearance by creating a more uniform skin color, and by smoothing the texture of the skin.

The laser quickly advances across the skin delivering pulses to the treatment site.  A full-face treatment typically lasts anywhere from 20 to 40 minutes.  Smaller areas, such as the nose, can be treated in 15 minutes.  In some cases a topical anesthetic cream is first applied to numb the treatment area.  For a short period of time following treatment, a cold compress may be applied to soothe the possible appearance of slight swelling or redness of the skin.  Treatments on the face, chest, neck, hands, legs, and abdomen are all done safely and quickly with laser technology.

How many Spider Vein treatments are required?

During your consultation, your skin's condition will be evaluated and a customized treatment program will be suggested.  In some cases only 1 or 2 treatments are required.  However, in many cases 3 to 5 or more treatments will be required to achieve premium results.  The number of treatment sessions will depend on the type of lesion to be treated, the location of the lesion on the body, and its size and color.  In many cases, it is recommended that treatments applied to the face be repeated at 3 to 4 week intervals.  The time intervals of your treatments will be determined during the consultation, where many of these issues and concerns may be addressed.

Are there any side effects?

Side effects are rare.  Immediately following treatment, the skin may appear flushed, brown-pigmented spots may appear darker, and capillaries may be more visible.  You will learn more about side effects during your consultation.

What does Radio Frequency Spider Vein treatment involve?

By using a special hair like needle, which is covered by a fine layer of Teflon; except its tip, radio frequency energy is released inside the vein under magnification. The vein wall gets heated, blood clots and over next few days to weeks the vein just disappears. Body’s clearing mechanism called as ‘phagocytosis’ does this job of removing choked up and functionless segments of vein.

What is RF Treatment?

RF treatment is a fifteen to thirty minute office procedure using radio frequency energy to eliminate large spider veins. One to three treatments may be necessary, however most patients achieve clearance within 1 visit. You will appear to have tiny mosquito bites and redness in the treated area for several days.

Who should consider the RF Treatment?

RF treatment is for Caucasian (white) or light skin types with visible spider veins. These often occur on or around the nose. RF is not for the treatment of a diffuse blush without large visible veins - but these can also be treated in our office using intensed pulsed light thereapy (IPL)

Will I experience any discomfort during the treatment?

You may feel a mild stinging sensation. We will apply a numbing cream to the skin ahead of time to reduce discomfort.
